Bamboo building for Community

Our last work camp was one of our most exhilarating actions for all present - a very practical, hands-on engagement with nature and earth to help restore a landslide area. Once again we have an opportunity to offer a weekend programme so you can take time off from routine city life to learn about nature and living with the land.

The Action

This time we will construct a bamboo and teak-leaf shelter. It will incorporate unique design principles using minimal materials to maximum effect. We will also learn from the local adivasis how to make teak-leaf panels to cover the bamboo framework. Since we have just two days we can expect to get a good work out!

The Purpose

The place, Van Wadi, is the base of an evolving eco-community. It is set in a 64-acre hilly area mostly consisting of naturally regenerated forest. The season will be at its best with lush green and flowing streams and a pond. Living arrangements are rustic and limited to the bare necessities which do not include piped water and electricity. This project will help provide an additional multi-purpose space for community events. In mid-October a Van Utsav to share skills of simple, natural living and community will be the first such event.

City life seldom offers the kind of satisfaction and community experience that is the heart of such a simple, collective action. We are all geared up in anticipation and warmly invite you to join us.

The Plan

Dates

We leave Mumbai, CST for Neral (By train) Friday 30th Sept, Evening
Stay and Work at Neral Sat 1st - Sun 2nd evening

Contribution

A contribution of Rs. 500 to Phase 5 will cover the programme including travel, food and other arrangements.

Additionally, you will need to carry packed food as dinner on the 30th.
